one of the things the wife is into lately is taking the girls to book signings of authors of children's books. our older one loves to read and these outings just seem to add to that interest. the munchkin loves to be read to and hopefully that will turn into a love of reading as well. there's a wonderful children's bookshoppe just off of the
UCI campus called
a whale of a tale which hosts many store events with some rather high profile authors. past events have included
j.k. rowling, jamie lee curtis, and julie andrews. the most recent book signing was to be with both first lady laura bush and her daughter jenna. they've published a children's book together titled
"read all about it." jenna wasn't able to make the signing but the first lady was there. you had to buy tickets/book vouchers in advance and security was especially high as one would expect. no bags, including purses were not allowed and a metal detector was involved. not to mention the secret service detail with their ear pieces stuck in their ears. there was quite a turn out and the line snaked around the courtyard just outside the shoppe. thankfully the weather cooperated and it didn't rain. laura bush was basically just a signing machine as we shuffled past her with our books opened to the first page in hand...no personalizations, no photos, etc. but the first lady was kind enough to acknowledge our six year old and asked her what her name was and if she liked to read. those few questions coming straight from the first lady made her day and she couldn't stop mentioning it as we enjoyed some hot cocoa at
peet's after the signing.
