since we are moving at the end of the month we want to take every opportunity to reduce the number of things we are actually going to take with us to the new house. case in point, the munchkin's bed. she had graduated from her crib a while ago...that was when she started standing in her crib and started thinking trying to climb out was a good idea. we had gotten her a toddler bed but she didn't take to that very well. she had been sleeping on a twin bed with the box spring on the floor (no frame) but that mattress was getting old so we figured she'd get a new bed when we moved into the new house. but then we started thinking how was this 21 month old going to adjust to a new place from the only home she's known? not only would she be in a new home and new room but she'd be sleeping in a completely unfamiliar bed? so, based on the theory that we want to minimize the trauma she might be confronted with we figured we'd get her her new bed prior to the move. it would give her a few weeks to get familiar with her new bed which would be in her new room at the new house.
well, that led us to ikea last weekend to pick out a bed for her. now, choujyo sleeps in a full bed that we also picked up from ikea when we moved two years ago and since the wife and i like to make sure the girls have the same things the munchkin got a full as well. so, once we'd picked up the bed, brought it home and got it assembled the munchkin was ready for her first night in her new big bed.
getting her down that first night was no problem. she didn't seem to mind that she was sleeping in a new bed. the interesting part came later that night. i should mention the fact that the munchkin rolls around in her sleep quite a bit so her falling off of the bed was a concern. we chose a bed that was low enough that it was easy for her to climb on herself and so a possible fall would be fairly painless. the bed rails we had been using with the twin bed didn't set up right with the bed frame so we decided to pass on those and just piled up some pillows on either edge of the bed and hoped those would prevent her from rolling off. well, later that night i went to check on her thinking the worst would be that i'd find her asleep on the floor. i quietly entered her room and looked at the center of her bed where i had left her...no munchkin. figuring she might have fallen off i then looked over to the floor beside the bed...no munchkin. holy cow! where'd she go? i have to admit there was a moment of confusion. now i had to carefully look around the room to figure out where she'd rolled off to. she was actually still on the bed but she had rolled almost to the foot of the bed with her top half actually hanging off the side of the bed! i quickly slid her back to the center of the bed and reset the pillows along the edges with some additional blankets.
well, since that first night we haven't had any more close calls (knock on wood). speaking of which i better go look in on the munchkin.
that was a long day but the girls got to see so many people today and grub on some favorites in the old neighborhood. we had lunch with the wife's parents (referred to as grandma and grandpa) and the wife's brother was able to join us before we left. we had lunch at the loft - we just love their island fried chicken. the wife had an appointment at the hair salon so while she was having her hair done the girls and i went and visited with my aunt and uncle. after that we swung by my parent's (referred to obaachan and ojiichan) place since we were going to have dinner with them to celebrate obaachan's birthday. one thing we inevitably end up doing while back in our old stomping grounds is we end up stocking up on some japanese groceries so before dinner we did some shopping at nijiya market and marukai. dinner was at akane chaya for some wafu (和風=japanese style) pasta.
its a good things you can't wear out DVDs by over-playing them. we just have to make sure we don't scratch them too much while handling them. that's because the girls are really into watching a set of DVDs we had obaachan pick up for us on her last trip to tokyo. NHK (the japan broadcasting corp.) had a kids show call "okaasan to issho" (with mother) that is i believe broadcast daily in japan. i guess the closest thing i would compare it to that the girls could catch on cable would be "the wiggles." there's singing, and dancing, and characters, etc.
the DVDs are recordings of different "family concerts" that were held throughout japan in the past year or two. the trip we took to japan with choujyo we tried to schedule it so we could actually attend one of the concerts but apparently getting tickets to these shows, especially in tokyo, is very difficult. choujyo had to settle for a trip to the nhk studio park in shibuya where she did get to "meet" a couple of the characters which she surprisingly remembers because she mentions how "soft" they were. that was over two years ago when she wasn't even three yet. anyways, i digress...i'll post some more pics of that trip in a later post. originally we had asked obaachan to pick the DVDs up so that the girls would hopefully want to watch them occasionally and get some practice listening to japanese. at the rate they are watching the DVDs now they are starting to pick up the dance steps and choujyo is actually singing along. gotta ask obaachan to pick up all remaining DVDs of the concerts so the girls will have as much variety. the DVDs are distributed by pony canyon.things are finally starting to wind down after the christmas holidays. let's just say a lot of...interesting...things have been going down/around during this year's festivities. some of which i will be posting about in the coming weeks, others will forever remained buried in the family archives...unless of course is was caught on tape and that's a whole 'nother story. the unfortunate thing this year was that the whole family got sick just around the 25th. the girls did get to enjoy the holiday but while wiping their noses or coughing and only one out of the four grandparents was up to coming over on christmas day. hopefully next year everyone will be in good health at this time of the year. well, one of our day-after-christmas routines is to hit the hallmark stores for the after christmas sales...we pick up cards for next year but what we are really after (well, at least me anyways) are the keepsake ornament series we've been collecting. choujyo has been getting the growing up train series and "my fifth christmas" will be her last in that series. jijyo got her first cat series ornament last year and got "my second christmas" this year. we also noticed last year that hallmark had a sisters series so we started getting those in pairs with the thought that each of the girls would always have their own. last year's sisters were two girls sharing an umbrella (looks like while shopping...sheesh)...this year they are two cats.
having two daughters that are hello kitty fans and also having taken choujyo to sanrio puroland (my vox post) in japan during her first trip to tokyo i couldn't help myself when i came across a news feed about a press release (click on the press box tab) that talked about sanriotown. choujyo and i checked out the site tonight and since they have some flash based games she's hooked. she also likes the fact that she can send out e-cards. she's used to flash games since she's got a neopet that's almost a year old that we look after together. time will tell whether sanriotown keeps the attention of choujyo and perhaps jijyo as she gets older.
quoting from the press release..."Riding on the existing online community services such as forum and free e-mail as well as download services, new social networking features have been launched on Sanriotown, which already has a current user-base of almost 2 million world wide. The two most prominent of the newly introduced features are Kitty Shop and Dream Studio..."
