well actually we've been moving boxes here and there over the last week or so but the final push starts this weekend. picked up the rental truck this morning...a 16 footer. was worried that it wouldn't have a ramp or something to make getting the larger appliances and such into the truck easier. luckily the truck came with a lift gate...cool! this way all we have to do is get the heavy items onto the lift, ride it up, and slide the items into the truck. no need to muscle it up any inclined ramp.
since we are moving at the end of the month we want to take every opportunity to reduce the number of things we are actually going to take with us to the new house. case in point, the munchkin's bed. she had graduated from her crib a while ago...that was when she started standing in her crib and started thinking trying to climb out was a good idea. we had gotten her a toddler bed but she didn't take to that very well. she had been sleeping on a twin bed with the box spring on the floor (no frame) but that mattress was getting old so we figured she'd get a new bed when we moved into the new house. but then we started thinking how was this 21 month old going to adjust to a new place from the only home she's known? not only would she be in a new home and new room but she'd be sleeping in a completely unfamiliar bed? so, based on the theory that we want to minimize the trauma she might be confronted with we figured we'd get her her new bed prior to the move. it would give her a few weeks to get familiar with her new bed which would be in her new room at the new house.
well, that led us to ikea last weekend to pick out a bed for her. now, choujyo sleeps in a full bed that we also picked up from ikea when we moved two years ago and since the wife and i like to make sure the girls have the same things the munchkin got a full as well. so, once we'd picked up the bed, brought it home and got it assembled the munchkin was ready for her first night in her new big bed.
getting her down that first night was no problem. she didn't seem to mind that she was sleeping in a new bed. the interesting part came later that night. i should mention the fact that the munchkin rolls around in her sleep quite a bit so her falling off of the bed was a concern. we chose a bed that was low enough that it was easy for her to climb on herself and so a possible fall would be fairly painless. the bed rails we had been using with the twin bed didn't set up right with the bed frame so we decided to pass on those and just piled up some pillows on either edge of the bed and hoped those would prevent her from rolling off. well, later that night i went to check on her thinking the worst would be that i'd find her asleep on the floor. i quietly entered her room and looked at the center of her bed where i had left her...no munchkin. figuring she might have fallen off i then looked over to the floor beside the bed...no munchkin. holy cow! where'd she go? i have to admit there was a moment of confusion. now i had to carefully look around the room to figure out where she'd rolled off to. she was actually still on the bed but she had rolled almost to the foot of the bed with her top half actually hanging off the side of the bed! i quickly slid her back to the center of the bed and reset the pillows along the edges with some additional blankets.
well, since that first night we haven't had any more close calls (knock on wood). speaking of which i better go look in on the munchkin.
just wrote an email to a friend in which i included this little drama that i forgot to include in my last post about our moving saga...
there was a house we had seen just a few days prior to the house we signed the lease on. the inside of the house was recently fully remodeled...new hardwood floors, kitchen counter tops and appliances, new windows throughout, etc. the girls and the wife fell in love with the charm of the place. the schools in the area were excellent. pretty much the only down side was that the backyard was a little on the cramp side. we had our realtor send in our application and since we really liked the place she urged us to write a letter saying why we were moving and what we thought of the house. well, the house was also being listed "for sale" and we were told that the owners had decided to accept the buy offer rather than leasing the house. the wife was devastated although i had warned her that since the listing realtor had mentioned receiving a buy offer that we probably wouldn't get the lease. now, although we had applied to lease the house in question we had no intention of stopping our search until we had signed a lease which is when we came across the listing for our new place. about 24-hrs after we had signed our new lease our realtor got a call from the listing realtor of the other house. apparently the sale of the house had fallen through and she was calling to see if we were still interested in leasing the house. the wife has been really philosophical about the whole thing. we're categorizing it as one of those "not meant to be" and "everything happens for a reason" things and moving forward with preparing to move into our new home in laguna niguel.
two years ago when we moved out to orange county we didn't give much thought to schools...(1) because sending our older daughter to school seemed like a long ways out and (2) we had heard that the schools in the OC were all pretty good. also, since we weren't familiar at all with south OC we figured we should just find a place to live to see how we liked the area. to top things off, we were also expecting the munchkin so the sooner we found a 3 bedroom home the better. it was a good plan...we found a nice single story detached house in a nice neighborhood. after spending the last two years here it turned out we really liked south OC and no major complaints about the house/neighborhood. so far so good but fast forward to present day and it turns out the "home" school that choujyo would have to attend based on our address doesn't rate all that well. how do we know how it rates? well, that's thanks to a great site called GreatSchools.net which is a great resource for parents when you want to find out about the schools your kids would/will be attending. we had tried to petition to get her into the school where she attends pre-school but we got wait listed so that triggered the need for us to look into a new home to move to that would put our kids into a school we were comfortable with.
so, that covers the back story for the beginning of our moving saga. the wife took the reigns of the searching and she's gotten not only really familiar with GreatSchools.net for researching the schools but she used a combination of craigslist.org, realtor.com, and a local realtor to find and get us into see a bunch of homes. our search criteria was a lot more narrower this time around but the wife did find a few places. through the approx. four week process this whole ordeal took we saw probably close to two dozen places. of those there were about half-a-dozen that we applied to lease but the first few we turned down because something about the place "didn't feel right." a couple of the places were taken off of the market (we learned later as we were viewing the homes) either because they had found tenants or a buyer.
well, who knew that the seventh time would be the charm but it was for us. we did have to compromise slightly on the school. we did find some places where the school ranked higher but the home for one reason or another didn't work for us. we we hoping to find a home closer to japanese school but in the end we are remaining in the area...the new house is inside of five miles from our current home. we signed the lease a couple of days ago and now we'll be taking the next few weeks to start packing things (phase two). moving day is at the end of may.
